This event is set up to create a dialogue about the commercialization of board games in relation to the design competition at Fastaval.
Since its inception, Fastaval's board game design competition has faced a dilemma regarding commercialization. The dilemma lies between 100% voluntarism for all Fastaval organizers on the one hand, and the possibility of designing, publishing, and thus earning money from a board game on the other hand.
From the beginning, Fastaval has wanted the board games participating in the competition to follow the same terms as the role-playing games designed for Fastaval and published at Fastaval. However, while Fastaval role-playing games have limited opportunities to reach a wider audience—and winning an Otto award is one of the highest achievements a Fastaval role-playing game can attain—board games have very different opportunities.
Fastaval is organized by a community of creative volunteers, and this is very important to Fastaval. Commercialization, meaning that someone profits from others' voluntary work, is detrimental to the willingness to do volunteer work and is therefore always a point of attention for Fastaval.
This has always created challenges in the design competition, where it is difficult—perhaps even impossible—to establish clear rules for what a board game at Fastaval may or may not do before and during Fastaval. Can the game be running a Kickstarter campaign? Can there be an agreement with a publisher? Can the game have been presented at other conventions or other commercial initiatives?
From both Fastaval’s and Alea’s side, there has been a desire to hold a dialogue meeting with Fastaval's board game designers, the organizers of the design competition, and others who might find this topic interesting. The purpose of this meeting is both the dialogue itself and, ultimately, the goal from the organizers’ side is to foster understanding of the dilemmas the competition faces, and perhaps to achieve a self-regulating competition.
